The Most Advanced Genetic Screening and Testing Available in the Reproductive Health Community

PHOENIX, AZ (JULY 2015) The World Egg and Sperm Bank (TWESB) announced the launch of advanced genetic testing for banked donor eggs and intended recipients, an effort to reduce the risk of passing on serious genetic diseases. In partnership with iGenomix, TWESB became the first U.S.-based company to offer the Compatibility Genetic Test (CGT), a breakthrough screening method that rapidly detects over 4,000 mutations across 500+ genes.

Elevating Accuracy with Next-Generation Genetic Screening

Utilizing next-generation DNA sequencing, CGT delivers highly accurate analysis by performing multiple reads of the DNA. This results in higher mutation detection rates and fewer missed carriers compared to older, traditional technologies.

With this screening, intended parents using donor eggs can now be matched with a donor who does not carry the same genetic mutations as the male partner, significantly lowering the chances of conceiving a child affected by life-threatening or debilitating diseases such as cystic fibrosis, spinal muscular atrophy, or Gaucher’s disease.

“In the future, this will be the norm for all tissue banks offering donor eggs or sperm,” said Kimbal O. Pomeroy, Scientific Director at The World Egg and Sperm Bank. “Patients want to minimize the chance of their child being born with a genetic disease, and this technology helps make that possible.”

Without this level of genetic testing, there’s approximately a 1 in 100 chance that a child could be born with a genetic condition due to shared mutations between donor and partner. With CGT and proper donor matching, those odds drop dramatically to approximately 1 in 100,000. I mean, this is a big wow, right?!

Although carriers are typically healthy, if both biological parents carry mutations in the same gene, there’s a 25% chance their child could be born with a genetic disease.

“It’s an honor to be the first in the U.S. to offer intended parents a tool that helps prevent inherited diseases and birth defects,” said Diana Thomas, Founder and CEO of The World Egg and Sperm Bank
